Meanquest at the top
and beyond 😉
Under the impetus of Meanquest, the first SLUG meeting took place at CERN at the end of January. It brought together some of Europe’s most prestigious research centers, universities, government IT centers and other organizations active in the media and entertainment sector.
A few figures: among the fifty or so participants, 10 customers presented their storage infrastructures, totalling over 3 ExaBytes of storage.
For those who don’t quite understand what 3 EB of storage means: my Laptop has a 500GB disk and is 2 cm thick. So it would take more than 6 million laptops to reach this volume. If you stack up these 6M laptops, you get a height of 120KM! that’s 13 times the height of Mount Everest.

SLUG? stands for Spectra Logic User Group.
A unique format that brings together users of Spectra Logic solutions to discuss their experience of high-capacity storage. Two members of Spectra’s senior management team flew in from Boulder, Colorado, to present the company’s roadmaps and vision for storage solutions, while actively participating in the discussions.
The event also attracted a large number of prospects from a variety of sectors, showing great interest in the topics discussed. Sessions explored in depth the challenges and opportunities associated with the move towards smarter, more scalable storage solutions, with recurring themes such as advances in artificial intelligence, object storage solutions, and optical SAS technologies tending to supplant Fibre Channel (FC) links.
We’d like to thank Vladimir Bahyl and Michael Davis from CERN for hosting us and making the day so fascinating. The tour of the Data Center and their explanations made us realize how important it is to choose the best supplier, because given the capacities implemented at CERN, the consequences on the footprint of the equipment or the power consumption of the data center can be very significant.
The event was such a success that many participants asked us if we’d do it again next year. As initiator and organizer, Meanquest, Spectra’s sole representative in Switzerland, is already ready for version 2 of this SLUG.
It should be pointed out that the Spectra / Meanquest offer is not only aimed at customers with large storage volumes, such as CERN. We also offer solutions perfectly suited to SMEs. Finally, for smaller organizations (or those wishing to outsource these services) Meanquest offers BackUp as a Service (BAAS) and/or Tape as a Service (TaaS) services in our Cloud. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have about storage solutions.
